      1. Newhouse 1

Newhouse 1 at Syracuse University was dedicated by President Lyndon B. Johnson on August 5, 1964. Made possible by a gift from media mogul Samuel I. Newhouse, this facility was designed by famed architect I.M. Pei. His work on this structure subsequently received one of the top four honors awarded by the American Institute of Architects in 1965.   This five-story precast concrete structure originally housed the School of Journalism, which merged with the Television and Radio Department in 1971 to form the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Newhouse 1, is linked to Newhouse 2 (1974) on its lower north elevation and to Newhouse 3 (2007) on its lower west elevation. In addition to classrooms, conference rooms, and faculty offices, Newhouse 1 contains lecture halls, a photo studio, computer labs, a Military Program Office, a Special Events Room, an Executive Board Room, the Office of Academic Affairs, and two endowed chair offices and is reported to comprise 79,393 gross square feet.
