The steep hill on which Old Main sits is known as
Chautauqua Hill
, named for the late-19th century national social movement. Chautauquas provided popular education combined with entertainment in the form of lectures, concerts and plays. From 1885 to 1895, a large tabernacle-like structure seating 1,500 occupied the pinnacle where Old Main now stands.
