   1. Quito, Ecuador (Short-term Program)

      The Ecuador program satisfies the practicum requirement for the HWS Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate, an entry-level credential required for many overseas jobs teaching English, but it is an opportunity for any students interested in teaching to become immersed in a supportive EFL setting. You will have the unique experience of being both language teachers (working alongside an EFL teacher in Quito), and language students (learning or perfecting your Spanish, and experiencing intercultural exchange through a homestay with an Ecuadorian family).
      
      In addition to working in a local classroom and learning Spanish, you will learn how to describe the English language using linguistic terminology, and will become familiar with current best practices in teaching English to Spanish speakers during a daily seminar. Learning a new language and navigating a new culture is a humbling experience which allows language teachers to better empathize and connect with their students. For HWS students interested in teaching abroad, the preparation that the Quito program will provide is ideal.
