On December 13, 2019, the City of Tuscaloosa celebrated its 200th birthday, and The Bicentennial Sculpture at The Park at Manderson Landing was constructed to recognize and commemorate this significant milestone. The sculpture, a gift from the University to the community, will depict the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva (also featured on the University’s seal), releasing an owl. This represents the release of knowledge to the city, the state, the nation and the world. The site choice along the River Walk is especially appropriate because it is shared by the citizens of Tuscaloosa and the University community.  Along with the sculpture, this project included enhancements to the area lighting and landscaping. It also includes the installation of a bronze trace, embedded in the approach sidewalks, representing the course of the Black Warrior River from Tuscaloosa to Demopolis that traces a timeline through Tuscaloosa history.
