      1. STALLINGS CENTER (RISE)

Building ID: 5017 | Abbreviation: SC

        600 Johnny Stallings Drive
        Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35401

The Stallings Center was built in 1994 to house the RISE Program. This state-of-the-art facility is named for former UA football coach and RISE advocate Gene Stallings, whose son Johnny benefited from participation in the program. A playground at the facility was named for Johnny Stallings in 2004. Founded in 1974, the RISE Program serves children ages birth to six years in the West Alabama area who have known or suspected disabilities. The children with disabilities are admitted to the RISE Program based upon a referral, a comprehensive evaluation, and the recommendations of a team of professionals and the child's family. Children who do not have disabilities are admitted to the program prior to the fall semester each year. Selections are made based on the ages of the children and the number of available slots in each classroom. The RISE Program offers services to families that may include physical, occupational, speech, and music therapies. In addition, the program serves as a practicum and internship site for students and as a model for similar programs across the country. RISE schools have been opened in Texas (Dallas, Austin, Houston, and Corpus Christi); Denver, Colorado; and Stillwater, Oklahoma.
