        The multi-specialty University Medical Center (UMC) is an academic medical center for training medical students and physicians and caring for patients in West Alabama. UMC provides clinical care in the areas of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, minor surgery, and also laboratory and x-ray services. Located within UMC is the Faculty-Staff Clinic, a walk-in clinic for faculty, staff, and their families who are covered under the University's medical insurance plan.

        The CCHS Dean's Office is on the first floor of the building, as are classrooms, the Health Sciences Library and the Institute for Rural Health Research, which conducts research to improve the health of rural Alabama. The library includes 6,000 books, 10,000 bound journal volumes and more than 50 print journal subscriptions. Online access is also available to more than 11,000 health care electronic journal titles, thousands of electronic books, and numerous databases, including Dynamed, Up-to-date, and MD Consult.

        The University of Alabama School of Medicine building is a 90,000-square-foot structure that was completed in 2004.
