Reese Phifer Hall, built in 1929 and first occupied in 1930, is the home of the College of Communication and Information Sciences. Reese Phifer is home to five of the six academic units in the college: The departments of Advertising and Public Relations, Communication Studies, Journalism, Telecommunication and Film, and the interdisciplinary doctoral program. The sixth academic unit, the School of Libraries and Information Studies, is housed in Gorgas Library. Reese Phifer Hall building also is home to The Alabama Scholastic Press Association (ASPA), The Institute for Communication and Information Research (ICIR), The National Elementary Schools Press Association (NESPA), The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, and The William E. Winter Reading Room and Learning Commons. The William E. Winter Reading Room maintains a collection of books, academic journals, trade magazines, Alabama newspapers, course reserves, and DVDs for use by students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the College. The room also includes a computer lab with Macintosh and Windows-bases computers with most software programs used throughout the College, as well as color printers/copiers and scanners. Constructed as the Alabama Union, the building served as the student union for more than 40 years. When it was designated as the home of the College of Communication and Information Sciences, it became the Communication Building. In 1991, the building was renamed Reese Phifer Hall to honor Tuscaloosa businessman and University benefactor J. Reese Phifer.
