Carmichael Hall is the home of the College of Education's Dean's office. The Capstone Education Society, and the Office of Development are also housed there. The programs in educational and school psychology and educational research are located on the third floor, and the Office of Student Services is located on the first floor. Several Literacy Education faculty offices are also located on the first floor. The building, constructed in 1925, was originally Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library and was intended to serve as a temporary home for the collections until funds to erect a larger structure could be secured. The upper two floors housed the books until the completion of the current Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library in 1939. It had a capacity of about 60,000 volumes in stacks kept closed to students. The general reading room, containing current periodicals, occupied the whole front section of the third floor. After the library was moved to its new quarters in 1940, the building served as the administrative headquarters for the University until the construction of Rose Administration Building in 1969. In 1971 the building was renamed Carmichael Hall in honor of the University's 20th president Oliver Cromwell Carmichael. Recently the bottom floor of the building has had areas expanded and renovated.
