Built in 1949, the Energy and the Environment Laboratory (formerly the Materials Research Laboratory) was an interdisciplinary facility focusing solely on non-metallic materials research from its establishment in 1962 until its merger with the Materials Research Institute (MRI) in 2001. In 2011, MRI moved to the Millennium Science Complex, and since then the facility has housed laboratories focused primarily on energy and the environment. The building was renamed to EEL in 2017. It houses lab and office space for research centers and scientists. It also houses a classroom auditorium. It is managed by the
Institutes of Energy and the Environment.
