In 1972 a Wildflower Preserve opened on the UNCW campus as a place where students and public can learn about and enjoy native plants in their habitats. This ten-acre site is within walking distance of the central part of the university. The Preserve site has two dedication plaques, one to Mr. Bluethenthal and the other to Dr. Wells.
