      Belk Hall was the second residence hall built on the UNCW campus.

      The Belk family, a mercantile family in Charlotte, NC, has generously contributed to numerous schools within the UNC system, including UNCW. Mr. Irwin Belk, son of Mr. William Henry Belk who founded Belk Department Stores in 1888, named this residence hall in honor of his mother, Mary Belk, a schoolteacher. Mr. Irwin Belk was a 1945 graduate of University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, a retired president of the Belk Group of Department Stores, member of the US Olympic Committee, served on the UNC Board of Governors and acted as President of the American Cancer Society for over 40 years. He was a North Carolina State Senator and a U.S Delegate to the 54th United Nations General Assembly.
