Armor Pierce is a metal sculpture on a metal platform elevated by concrete blocks that was placed between the Music and Art/Architecture Buildings when it was purchased in 1987 as the first acquisition in the Reese Collection of outdoor sculpture. Its sculptor, Jim Buonaccorsi, earned the BA from Rhode Island College in Providence and the MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield, Michigan (where Carl Milles, Swedish sculptor of Europa and the Bull was on the faculty and where a casting of Europa and the Bull is also located). He has won a large number of awards for sculptures constructed mostly from steel with other media such as bronze, aluminum, cast iron, glass, and concrete. His work addresses social, political, and philosophical issues. Since 1993 he has been on the faculty at the University of Georgia. The sculpture was removed to allow construction of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center.
