    1. Merritt Hall

Merritt Hall is home to the Education Department.

Merritt Hall was built in 1879, partly from building stones salvaged from the old alumni hall. It was a gift of Julia Douglas Merritt, who later would donate funds to build Demarest Hall. "Modest" was a word often used to describe Merritt Hall, although students found their own vernacular to describe the structure. In 1880, the campus newspaper reported that "the new building is not as tasty as the chapel." At first Merritt contained classrooms, and later housed chemistry laboratories.

For years, the campus clock was set into Merritt Hall's gable. On the eve of Hobart's centennial, students climbed up to the clock and made it strike 100 times. During the summer of 2006, Merritt's interior was upgraded with new bathroom fixtures, windows and flooring, and a conference room for graduate students was added.
