Athens Services’ new materials recovery facility opened in October 2014 to handle the recycling needs of over 30,000 of its customers in the Northern Los Angeles area. The site is a redevelopment of a former waste processing facility that was also owned by Athens Services. Positioned among dozens of aging waste, recycling and automotive businesses, the newly developed facility immediately stands out. With its modern façade and clean lines, it sets an example for the recycling community in Southern California to follow. The state-of-the-art facility was redeveloped in order to better serve the Los Angeles area’s waste and recycling needs. Capable of processing 330,000 tons per year of mixed waste from commercial and residential customers, Athens Services new materials recovery facility or “MRF” uses the latest in recycling technology to extract recyclable materials from the waste stream including near infrared wavelength optical sorting technology, disc screening technology, air density material separators and automatic bag breaker equipment. The entire operation is fully enclosed with automatic doors and a built-in system to mitigate any dust and odors. While the cutting edge technology within the facility is world class, the building itself has modern offices that are being submitted for LEED Silver certification; using energy efficient lighting, low-flow fixtures in the restrooms and sustainable building materials. Athens Services is also installing a 226-kilowatt photovoltaic system that will produce about 30% of the facility’s power. This will make it the first LEED certified solar-powered recycling facility in Southern California. The site uses only native plants for its landscaping in order to reduce water usage and has three electric vehicle charging stations. Every motor used to power the conveyor belts is rated as 50% more efficient in energy usage compared to standard motors.
