The university named Grimes Residence Hall for John Bryan Grimes, planter, politician, trustee, and son of the Confederate Major General Bryan Grimes. He attended the university from 1882 to 1884 and then returned to Pitt County to run his farm.

The Commission on History, Race, and a Way Forward recommended in an April 2021 resolution the the Chancellor that Grimes' name be removed from honor based on the following information:

            • Grimes enriched himself by enslaving and stealing the labor of Black men, women, and children.
            • He sexually exploited enslaved women.
            • He committed treason by serving as a senior officer in the Confederate army and making war against the United States.
            • In partnership with William L. Saunders, led efforts to organize the Ku Klux Klan in eastern North Carolina and directed its terrorist activities.
