      Adele Simmons Hall (ASH)

Adele Simmons Hall is home to the nation’s first undergraduate cognitive science program, now the School of Cognitive Science. Many of the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies’ offices and research laboratories are also located in ASH.

Cognitive Science (CS) at Hampshire focuses on the study of mind, brain, behavior, and intelligent technologies. CS integrates ideas and methods from psychology, neuroscience, computer science, philosophy, linguistics, evolutionary biology, animal behavior, education, anthropology, and other fields.

Within the School, you can do hands-on work in laboratories dedicated to cognitive psychology, animal behavior, child development, and brainwave research. Numerous award-winning films have been produced in the computer animation facilities. A high-performance computer cluster supports advanced work in artificial intelligence, computer graphics, and distributed systems.

The School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies (HACU) engages students with interests ranging from philosophy, literature, film, video, photography, history, dance, painting, art history, cultural theory and history, critical theory, religious studies, studio arts, to ancient studies, music, American studies, media studies, environmental design, and architecture.

Whether analyzing an ancient text or a postmodern art form, producing a film or a multimedia project, choreographing dance or improvising music, the faculty and students of HACU are all concerned with the construction of ideas and aesthetic forms, as well as the analysis of their historical origins, their cultural contexts, and their human significance and value.
