      1. Bonobo Conservation Project, Phase II

         Organization: African Wildlife Foundation
         
         Extending AWF's work to safeguard bonobo habitat into the eastern section of the Maringa-Lopori Wamba (MLW) landscape in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The project's main goal is to secure Protected Area status for 2,000 sq. km. alongside the eastern periphery of the Luo Scientific Reserve.  The bonobo  is critically endangered and Africa's least known great ape.
