      1. Daily Travel Distance of African elephants (Loxodonata africana) in Botswana

Organization: Association of Zoos and Aquariums

Researching how far African elephants walk on a daily basis in Botswana, to compare their walking distance to that recorded in captivity, and to share the data with local policy planners. Elephants in the wild have been reported to walk between 2.5 and 90 km in a single day, but no study has been designed to systematically measure daily walking distance in Africa. The project will address three specific questions: (1) what is the mean daily walking distance of elephants in Botswana, (2) what factors influence daily walking distance, and (3) how does the distance moved compare to that recorded from elephants living in zoos.
