Since its founding in 1958, the Ackland Art Museum has been one of North Carolina’s most important cultural resources, serving broad local, state, and national audiences as part of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The museum's origins trace back to a bequest from philanthropist William Hayes Ackland, who recognized the lack of museums in the area and contributed the funding to establish the museum.
With a permanent collection of over 19,000 works of art, the museum is home to premier collections of North Carolina pottery, Asian art, and works on paper, including drawings, prints, and photographs. It also boasts significant collections of European masterworks, twentieth-century, and contemporary art.
Featuring a dynamic year-round calendar of special exhibitions and public programs, the Ackland Art Museum encourages visitors to engage with both the rich legacy of art history and the work of contemporary artists from around the world. Its universal collection of artworks, spanning from antiquity to the present, uniquely supports the university's teaching and research missions.
