          Completed in 1953, the building was named for Robert March Hanes, son of a leading textile manufacturing family in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Hanes graduated from Carolina in 1912 and was elected to the General Assembly in 1929, reelected in 1931, and then was elected to the state Senate in 1933. Robert March Hanes supported a broad array of philanthropic, educational, and reform causes.
