Battle Hall is named for Kemp Plummer Battle, the first President of the University after it closed during reconstruction.

The Commission on History, Race, and a Way Forward recommended in a April 2021 resolution to the Chancellor that Battle's name be removed from honor based on the following:

          • Battle enslaved Black men, women, and children.
          • He committed treason as a signatory of North Carolina's ordinance of secession from the United States.
          • He used his positions of influence to perpetuate and sustain systems of racial oppression - first, slavery, and then the regime of Jim Crow.
