Organization: American Museum of Natural HistoryWorking with partners to address
in situ conservation of the critically endangered Saola (
Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) in central Vietnam. Researchers integrated field surveys with genetic analyses to develop innovative Saola survey techniques, provide data on abundance, distribution, and threats, create the first maps estimating relative Saola occurrence in the study area, and identify priority areas for conservation action. The effort also focused on community-level awareness of Saola, providing education on the benefits of forest management, and training local conservation workers in Saola survey techniques with sustainable forest management as the program's ultimate goal. These initiatives successfully brought attention to the area and its threatened species, resulting in the establishment of two protected areas designed specifically to conserve the Saola and their habitat in Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue Provinces, the global priority area for Saola conservation.
