Sugar maple, the legendary syrup tree, is perhaps a surprising choice to find in Cedar City. Not well-adapted to our climate, it nevertheless persists in several areas on campus. (Some trees have been removed as they succumbed to the alkaline waters, difficult soils and harsh winds of Southern Utah.) In autumn, gloriously colored leaves burn away the melancholy of an approaching winter. Homeowners wishing to replicate such a display would do well to seek out our native bigtooth maple or recent Norway maple hybrids that sport similar fall colors.
