Leaves of this tree are green on top and silvery-white on the underside. A tall, fast-growing tree, silver maple has brittle wood that breaks up in windstorms. It often grows on moist sites but can withstand drier conditions. Fall color is inconsistent; some trees give good displays of yellow and red while others drop leaves of no appreciable color. In Utah’s alkaline soils it is common to see silver maples with yellow, iron-chlorotic leaves on part or all of the canopy. Silver maple grows quickly, but has its liabilities.
