Ponderosa pine is one of the premier lumber trees of the western United States. A Utah native, it produces long needles, usually in bundles of threes or sometimes twos. Old trees can become quite large and produce a reddish-colored bark broken into rough, longitudinal or diamond-shaped patterns. The ponderosa pines at this location were planted by Jim Bowns, SUU Biology/Range Management Professor, in 1965 at the beginning of his SUU career.
