In Utah, this tree is planted more than any other maple. It has large green leaves that produce dense shade. Masses of chartreuse flowers in late April are followed by seeds (called samaras, the little "helicopters" that spin their way to the ground). Norway maple exudes a milky white sap from the leaf petiole when it is picked from a branch. Fall color is golden yellow. In hot, windy climates Norway maple exhibits leaf scorch and becomes stunted unless planted among the protection of buildings and other trees. There are numerous varieties used in street plantings and urban landscapes, including columnar and red-leaved forms.
