This tree features large, palmately divided leaves, upright candelabras of white flowers in spring and shiny, dark brown nuts that grow inside a spiny husk. The large upright trees can be identified in winter by the brown, sticky terminal buds and U-shaped leaf scars. This tree produces dense shade and is widely planted in temperate climates although less so in recent years than previously.
