      1. Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica)

        Latin Name - Fraxinus pennsylvanica
        Height - 60-70 feet
        Spread - 45 feet
        Growth Rate - Fast
        USDA Zone - 2
        Drought Tolerance - Moderate

This tree and its partners are the last remaining ashes of a double row of trees which once lined the sidewalk leading to Old Main. Native to the midwest, green ash has been a popular tree for many years and offers beautiful yellow fall color. Known as a relatively fast-growing tree capable of handling tough conditions, its use in recent years has been tempered by a susceptibility to borers that can weaken and kill trees. Current nursery grown selections are usually seedless; many older trees pre-date the introduction of seedless cultivars and seed themselves freely into shrub and flower beds. (NOTE: Because of the devastation caused by Emerald Ash Borer, urban forestry professionals no longer recommend planting of this species in Utah.)
