This species is popular with landscape architects and homeowners alike for its oval, upright shape, profuse flowering, dense crown and outstanding fall display of red and orange. Flowering pear does produce a pear, but it looks like a small, hard berry. Available now in many cultivars, the old variety, 'Bradford', has a tendency to produce branches of poor structure that split out as the tree ages. Newer varieties with improved branching are now widely available.
