Spring brings beautiful magenta pink flowers of eastern redbud on bare branches. Afterward, the tree grows wonderful heart-shaped leaves to adorn a small, spreading canopy. Blooming after the plums and crabapples, redbud extends the spring flowering season. It is native to the midwestern and eastern portions of the United States and can be slow to establish. Eastern redbud is a member of the pea family as an examination of its flowers will readily attest.
