This upright tree produces highly prized wood used to make musical instruments, veneers and many other products. It also produces a hard-shelled nut encased by a fleshy rind that drops from the tree by the hundreds. Best growth occurs in deep, moist soils. Make note of the missing bark on the south side of the tree - the result of a lightning strike in the summer of 2006 that blew bark pieces almost a block away.
