The classic American elm with its vase shape and ascending branches once shaded thousands of streets and yards of this country until destroyed by Dutch elm disease. American elms are now replaced by elm hybrids (see Frontier elm), zelkova, and other species that diversify urban forests. American elm leaves are doubly serrated (the serrations are serrated) and turn yellow in autumn. Early pictures of campus show many American elms planted along 300 West.
