The first Muscle Beach location on the sand along Santa Monica Bay was founded in the 1930s, when the WPA installed exercise equipment on the south side of Santa Monica Pier. It became the birthplace of the modern fitness movement in the USA. The weight lifting equipment was the workout area of such fitness groundbreakers as Vic Tanny, Jack LaLanne, and Joe Gold. Meanwhile, in 1952 a simple weight training pen called the Venice Beach Weight Pen was established near the current Muscle Beach location. When the Santa Monica removed a large portion of the equipment at the original Muscle Beach in 1959, the scene moved south to Venice. Muscle Beach, Venice was the training gym of such renowned former body-builders as Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The facility was completely renovated in 1990, and today features a huge concrete barbell on the roof and bleachers for spectators. Want to work out alongside legends.
