The Bradbury Building is the oldest commercial building remaining in the central city and one of Los Angeles' unique treasures. Still splendid more than 100 years after its 1893 opening, its magical light-filled Victorian court, open cage elevators, marble stairs, and ornate iron railings make this one of downtown's most photographed icons. Lewis Bradbury, a mining and real estate millionaire, commissioned Sumner Hunt to create a spectacular office building. But George H. Wyman who took over the construction to completion is credited with its final design which was Bradbury's pick.
At the corner of 3rd and Broadway, some would say the Building's exterior is an ordinary brick office building, one must set foot in it's majestic interiors to get the full sense of this exquisite architectural beauty. A welcoming narrow courtyard, walled in with terra cotta, covered with a glass ceiling, and flanked with two iron original, still manually operated hydraulic elevator. The building underwent extensive restoration in the 1990's and is open to the public for viewing of its ornate staircases, elevators, tile floors and majestic skylight.
