Pauley Pavilion is regarded as one of the finest all-around collegiate facilities in the nation and has been the site of numerous illustrious events. Simply stated, there are countless sports arenas. But there is only one Pauley Pavilion.
Home to Bruin Basketball since 1965, Pauley has become an epicenter for world-class athletes, legendary personalities and record-breaking wins. Its iconic truss-style architecture has further boosted the arena's reputation, making Pauley Pavilion one of the most recognized arenas in the world. In 2008, UCLA Athletics selected NBBJ to renovate and expand Pauley Pavilion. The design intends to preserve the achievements of Pauley’s past, while ensuring its updated infrastructure and expanded amenities attract a new generation of student athletes and sports fans.
The NBBJ design includes: an exterior glass concourse with natural light and room for concessions, restrooms and merchandise; a revamped bowl with tilt-up seats; room for 1,000 additional fans and better views of the court; a Pavilion Club that accommodates up to 300 guests with food and bar service; and new men’s and women’s locker rooms, court floor, scoreboards and media spaces.
The design also pays homage to the legacy of former UCLA Men’s Basketball Coach John Wooden, who led the Bruins to win a record 10 NCAA championships in 12 years. For example, a statue of Coach Wooden is located at the main North entrance to the building; the east concourse is named Wooden Way; coach’s seat — Section 104, Row B, Seat 6 — is the only seat in Pauley Pavilion colored yellow instead of Bruin blue; and the floor bears the name of “Neil and John Wooden Court.”
Also winner of the USGBC-LA Sustainable Innovation Awards.
