The Audubon Center at Debs Park in Los Angeles was the nation's first LEED Platinum building that is a beacon of cutting-edge green building technology and a model of sustainable architecture. The design of the Audubon Center at Debs Park focuses on a number of key environmental issues that are at the heart of sustainable building, including renewable energy sources, water conservation, recycled building materials, and native landscaping. The 5,023 square-foot building is the first in the city of Los Angeles to be entirely powered by on-site solar systems functioning entirely off the grid. The building also uses significantly less water than a conventional building of its size. Green By the Numbers: - Entirely off-grid, using only power generated on site. - Expected to use only 25,000 kWh of energy each year (around five kWh per square foot). - Designed to use 70% less water than a comparable conventional building, - Treats all wastewater on site - More than 50% of the building materials were manufactured locally - More than 97% of construction debris was recycled
