For many years, Clarendon Road and parking spaces separated Irwin Library from Jordan Hall and Atherton Union. In 1991, a lush landscape of green grass, trees, and sidewalks replaced the road and pavement. The University removed the streets in front of Jordan Hall and Atherton Union on the west and Irwin Library on the east, and planted grass. Final landscaping also included walkways, trees, and shrubs.
