Will Rice College
At Rice, a residential college functions as an extended family. Undergraduates are randomly assigned to one of 11 residential colleges so that each college represents a cross-section of the university's diversity.
What's there: Undergraduate housing, Will Rice Commons
Named for: William Marsh Rice Jr., nephew of and namesake of the university founder, a Houston businessman and a trustee of the Rice Institute from 1899 until his death in 1944. He served as chairman of the Rice board from 1941-1944.
Built: The old wing of Will Rice College (formerly known as South Hall) was built in 1912 and designed by Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson; it is one of the four original buildings on the Rice campus. In 1957, the Will Rice commons and an additional residential wing was added, designed by Wilson, Morris, Crain & Anderson. In 2010, the 1957 residential wing was replaced with a larger one designed by Hopkins Architects.
