“Prairie Plots” is a temporary demonstration garden created by Maggie Tsang, a Wortham Fellow at Rice Architecture, in collaboration with Rice’s Facilities Engineering and Planning Department. It incorporates more than 1,300 plants and seeds, including grasses, selected for their ability to thrive in Houston's harsh climate. It is intended to test and demonstrate future landscape alternatives, acting as a model for the rest of the city by rethinking lawns and planting perennial species that increase biodiversity, improve soil health and groundwater infiltration and require fewer resources for maintenance and upkeep.
