MD Anderson Hall
Anderson Hall is home to the Rice School of Architecture. Fittingly, the building was designed by the firm of Staub & Rather: John Staub was a student of Ralph Adams Cram, who designed the university’s first buildings and the campus master plan. His partner J.T. Rather Jr. ’19 was the first Rice architecture alumnus to design a building for the Rice campus. Rather designed the building in consultation with William Ward Watkin, the former employee of Ralph Adams Cram, who became the founding chairman of the Rice architecture school.
What’s there:
Named for: Monroe D. Anderson, successful banker and cotton merchant and founder of the MD Anderson Foundation.
Built: 1947, Staub & Rather, William Ward Watkin consulting architect; 1981 addition, James Stirling, Michael Wilford & Associates with Ambrose/McEnany.
