The School of Nursing, established in 1890 as the John Sealy Hospital Training School for Nurses, is the oldest school of nursing in the Southwest. It was organized originally as an independent school under a board of lady managers and was later transferred to the University of Texas, where it began acting as one of the divisions of the UT Medical Branch, with diplomas granted by the university in 1923.
The School of Health Professions (SHP) was the first allied health school in the Southwest U.S. when it opened its doors in 1968. The school has helped carry on a tradition of improving health in Texas and beyond, granting degrees and certificates to more than 10,500 graduates in many health professions. In response to the serious shortages of health professionals, the school is embarking on an ambitious expansion in enrollment and developing innovative new programs.
