It has been said that Chapin House's staircase served as the inspiration for the staircase of Scarlett O'Hara’s Tara in Gone With the Wind, since the novel's author, Margaret Mitchell, was a proud Chapinite while at Smith. The house, built in 1903, has a mix of singles and doubles, for a capacity of about 70 students. One side of the house commands spectacular views of Paradise Pond and the mountains beyond.
