    1. Cromwell House

      Cromwell House is one of the five Friedman Complex apartment buildings. Otelia Cromwell was the first African American to graduate from Smith. After her graduation in 1900, she went on to earn a master’s degree from Columbia University and, in 1926, became the first African American woman to earn a doctorate from Yale University. A distinguished scholar, teacher and author, she was a professor at Miner Teachers College in Washington, D.C., until her retirement in 1944. She received an honorary degree from Smith in 1950.
