    1. Machado House

Machado House is one of the five Friedman Complex apartment buildings. Salomé Amelia Machado was the first Latina to attend Smith, as well as one of the first women from outside the United States admitted to the college. Born in Cuba in 1861, she graduated with the class of 1883. In a letter home, she described Smith as “a perfect Paradise. Not a bit too much has been said about the beauty of its natural surroundings….It is really quite an ideal place.” Machado and her husband, Minton Warren, a professor of Latin at Harvard University, raised two children in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
