The Alumnae Gymnasium was home to the first women’s basketball match in 1893, a game introduced by Senda Berenson, the first director of the gymnasium and an instructor of physical culture at Smith. Alumnae Gym is closed for the duration of the Neilson Library construction project, expected to be completed in 2020; the college's special collections, including the Sophia Smith Collection and the college archives, previously housed in Alumnae Gym, are located in Young Library until the reopening of Neilson.
