Quercus palustris ‘Pringreen’ ‘Green Pillar Oak’
The narrow, columnar Green Pillar pin oak is especially interesting because it departs so dramatically from the broad form of the common pin oak species. Pin oaks typically send out low horizontal branches that sweep the ground and must be limbed up to accommodate human activity beneath them. In contrast, this cultivar typically grows to 50 feet tall with a width of only 12 feet, and the Regis specimen currently appears even narrower.
This tree was discovered in a row of random seedlings in 1994. It has a strong central leader and nearly vertical side branches, though an occasional branch may drift away from the tree’s upright form. Its glossy green foliage turns rusty orange to deep red in the fall. The leaves are typical of pin oaks, deeply lobed with bristle tips like most foliage in the red oak group.
