Quercus alba x robur ‘Crimson Spire Oak’
Crimson Spire oak, a hybrid between American white oak (Quercus alba) and English oak (Quercus robur), has become a popular choice in our region wherever a tall, narrow tree is needed. The American parent contributes attractive red fall color, which English oak lacks, while the English oak provides the columnar form.
This tree typically reaches about 45 feet in height with a spread of around 15 feet, though it may remain somewhat smaller under our growing conditions. In some cases, the form becomes slightly broader at the base with age. The foliage reflects both parents, with rounded, moderately deep lobes and a green color with a subtle bluish cast.
Crimson Spire oak performs well in full sun, is fully cold hardy in our region and adapts to a wide range of soil types.
