Malus sp. ‘Spring Snow’ ‘Spring Snow Crabapple’
The crabapple cultivar ‘Spring Snow’ forms a line of trees on the edge of the Regis north commons. In landscaping terminology, a line of one kind of trees like this is often referred to as an “allee.” There are so many cultivars of crabapple that for anyone besides the truly obsessed, their number can be considered infinite. It’s best to think of them in groups: the white-flowered ones, the red-flowered ones, the compact ones, the weeping ones and the columnar ones. ‘Spring Snow’ checks the white-flowered and upright boxes, though with age this cultivar’s canopy does broaden somewhat but these trees are close enough to each other for that to not be noticeable.
‘Spring Snow’ cultivar is noted for excellent cold hardiness but its most important attribute is being a sterile clone, thus avoiding a messy fruit drop on the adjacent wide walkway. It’s also drought tolerant and adapts to many soil types. In the fall, the leaves turn yellow.
