This cottage is named in honor of Gerrit J. Diekema who served as a member of the Hope College Council (later the Board of Trustees) from 1893 to 1930. He also served as mayor of Holland from 1895-1896, and had a major national political career. Diekema’s last position was as Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1929 until his death in 1930. An estimated 8,500 people paid their respects to Diekema in Hope Memorial (later Dimnent) Chapel, and nearly 3,000 attended the funeral the next day. A memorial plaque was also placed in the Chapel and was dedicated during Holland’s 125th anniversary celebration in 1972.
