One of the four North Quad dorms, Appleby was constructed in 1948 and renovated in both 1992 and 2003. The 2003 renovation, funded by Arthur and Helene Kemp, included the addition of new rooms and an expanded lounge.

It is 15,680 square feet and was named by Mrs. Jerene Appleby Harnish of Ontario in honor of her late husband, Frank Bell Appleby. It was CMC's first dormitory, and its mattresses were furnished by two fathers of undergraduates who were in the mattress manufacturing business.
